3、ells,werecomparedtodetermineifCDandWDstrainsbelongtodistinctserotypesorsubtypesofBCV.Allstrainshemagglutinatedbothmouseandchickenerythrocytesat4°C,buttheratiosofhemagglutinationtiterswithmouseerythrocytescomparedtochickenerythrocytesshoweddiversityforbothCDandWDstrains.SomeCDand

4、WDstrainsdidnothemagglutinatechickenerythrocytesat37°Candshowedreceptor-destroyingenzymeactivityagainstchickenerythrocytes.Hyperimmuneantiserawereproducedinguineapigsagainst3and7strainsofBCVfromCDandWD,respectively.Nosignificantdifferencesinantibodytitersagainstthesestrainswereo

5、bservedbyindirectimmunofluorescencetests.However,invirusneutralizationtests,antiserato1CDand2WDstrainshad16-foldorlowerantibodytitersagainst3WDand1CDstrainsthanagainstthehomologousstrains,andthisvariationreflectedlowantigenicrelatednessvalues(R=13-25%),suggestingthepresenceofdif

6、ferentsubtypesamongBCV.Inhemagglutinationinhibitiontests,someone-wayantigenicvariationsamongstrainswerealsoobserved.TheseresultssuggestthatsomeantigenicandbiologicaldiversityexistsamongBCVstrains,butthesevariationswereunrelatedtotheclinicalsourceofthestrains;i.e.CDorWD.Bovinecor

7、onavirus(BCV)isaprimarycauseofneonatalcalfdiarrhea(CD)worldwide[4,13].Bovinecoronavirusisalsoassociatedwithacutediarrheainadultcattleduringthewinterseasonreferredtoaswinterdysentery(WD)[4,17,18,24,26].Besidesinfectingthesmallandlargeintestinesofcalves,BCValsopossessesatissuetrop
