3、ruseswereisolatedfromneonatalcalveswithdiarrhoeainGreatBritainandDenmark.Theywereseriallypassedingnotobioticcalveswhichdevelopedacutediarrhoea.Pathologicallesionswerefoundinthesmallandlargeintestines.CoronavirusesWeredemon-stratedbyelectronmicroscopicexaminationofthefaecesandintestinal
4、contents,immuno-fluorescentstainingofsectionsofsmallandlargeintestineandbyisolationintrachealorgancultures.InearlypassagesoftheBritishcoronavirus,particlesofabout30nmindiameterwereobservedinthefaecesbyelectronmicroscopy.Theseparticleswereremovedfromthecoronaviruspreparationsbycross-pro
5、tectionexperimentsincalves.ThecoronavirusesweremorphologicallyandantigenicallysimilartothebovinecoronavirusisolatedintheUnitedStatesandtheBritishviruswasadaptedtoreplicateincalfkidneycellcultures.INTRODUCTIONCoronavirus-likeparticleshavebeenassociatedwithdiarrhoeaincalvesintheUnitedSta
6、tes(Mebusetal.,1972;Stairetal.,1972)andtheviruswascharacterizedasamemberofthecoronavirusgroupbySharpeeetal.(1976).ThepresenceofthevirushasbeenreportedinBelgiumonthebasisofasero-logicalsurvey(Zygraichetal.,1975)andinCanadaonthebasisofelectronmicroscopyandimmunofluorescenceoftissuesectio
