2、hingswerecollectedfrom27normaladultsduring38naturallyacquiredcolds.Thewashingswereexhaustivelytestedusingtissuecultures,organculturesandelectronmicroscopy.Washingsyieldingnoidentifiableagentwereinoculatedintohumanvolunteers,andfurtherspecimensob-tainedfromthelatterwereexaminedbythesametechn
3、iquesinvitro.Viruseswereidentifiedinassociationwith25oftheoriginal38colds(65.7%).Fif-teenwererhinoviruses(39.5%),sevencoronaviruses(18.4%),twowerepara-influenzaviruses,andonewasinfluenzavirus.Useoforganculturesandofvolunteerssignificantlyincreasedtheisolationrate.Noagentwascultivatedfromthe
4、remaining13specimens,althoughtestsinVolunteersshowedthatcold-producingagentswerepresentinfiveofthem(13%).Threespecimensgavedoubtfulresultsinvolunteers,andfiveothers,allcollectedwithinaperiodofsixweeksinDecemberandJanuary,apparentlycontainednoinfectiousagent.Keywords:commoncold,rhinovirus,co

6、chascoronaviruses,somerhinoviruses,andsomeparainflu-enzavirusesisknowntopresenttechnicaldifficulties,andtheuseofhumanembryonicnasalortrachealorganculture,althoughlaborious,hasbeenshowntoincreaseisolationrates[TyrrellandBynoe,1966;HigginsandEllis,19731.Ithasremaineduncertainwhetheravailablet
