3、andbiochemicalproperties.TheKakegawaisolatewasabletoreplicateinthepresenceorabsenceof5-iodo-2'-deoxy-uridine,indicatingthatitsviralnucleicacidwasRNA.Itwashighlysensitivetoetherandchloroform,andmoderatelysensitivetotrypsinandheat.Itwas,however,readilystabilizedbytreatmentwithcationat50°
4、Cfor1h.ItsinfectivitywasslightlyreducedatpH3.0.Theviruspassedthroughamembranefilterof200nmporesize,butnotthroughoneof100nmporesize.Thebuoyantdensityoftheviruswasdeterminedinasucrosedensitygradient.Thepeakofinfectivityandhemagglutininactivitywasfoundatadensityof1.182.Neutralizationandhe
5、magglutinationinhibitiontestsshowedacloseserologicalrelationshipbetweentheKakegawaisolateandtheAmericanstrainofcalfdiarrheacoronavirus.INTRODUCTIONBovinecoronavirusescausingneonatalcalfdiarrheahavebeenisolatedintheU.S.A.(Stairetal.,1972;Doughrietal.,1976)andinEnglandandDenmark(Bridgere
6、tah,1978b).ThepresenceofthevirushasalsobeenreportedinBelgiumonthebasisofaserologicalsurvey(Zygraichetal.,1975)andbyimmunofluorescence(Wellemansetal.,1977a,b),andinCanadabyelectronmicroscopicandimmunofluorescenceobservations(Acresetal.,1975;Morinetal.,1976).Incontrasttotheconditionincal
7、ves,theetiologicalagentsofdiarrheainadultcattlehavebeenreportedinNewZealand(Homeretal.,1976;Durhametal.,1979),andrecentlyTakahashietal.(1980)isolatedacoronavirus-likeagentassociatedwithepizooticdiarrheainacowinJapan.ThisreportdealswiththephysicoChemicalcharacteristicsoftheJapaneseiso
