4、,samevehiclewithdifferentfigurativemeanings,anddifferentvehicleswithsimilarfigurativemeanings.TheidentificationoftheserelationsmightaidtranslatorsinunderstandingandrenderingvehiclebetweenEnglishandChinese.BasedontwoEnglishversionsof“红楼梦”--onebyXianyiYangandGladysYang,theotherbyDavidHawkes--thethe
5、sissummarizesanddiscussessevenmethodsoftranslatingvehicle,withareferencetoPeterNewmark’ssevenproceduresfortranslatingmetaphor.Thethesisanalyzesthestrategiesoftranslatingvehicleinthesetwoversions,concludingthatbothalienationandadaptationhavetheirmeritintranslatingvehicleandthestrategyinuseoftendep
6、endsonthetranslator’spurposefortranslatingthework.Inlightoftranslationstrategy,thesevenmethodsoftranslatingvehiclemaybeconsideredonacontinuumfromalienationtoadaptation,withliteraltranslationandfreetranslationasthetwoextremesofthecontinuum.Moreover,severalmethodscanbeusedtogethertorenderavehicle.I
