2、rus(BCV)strainsfromdiarrheiccalffaeceswereadaptedtogrowinHRT18cellsandcomparedinimmunofluorescence(IF),haemagglutinationinhibition(HAI)andneutralisation(NT)testswiththreeotherstrainsofBCVandahumancoronavirus(HCV)strainobtainedfromotherlaboratories.Polyclon
3、alantiseraagainstthese6viruseswereraisedinrabbits.NosignificantdifferencesbetweenvirusesweredetectedbyIF.IntheHAItesttheHCVstrainwasdistinguishablefromthe5BCVstrainsandserologicalvariationbetweentheBCVstrainswasshown.HCVcouldbedis-tinguishedbyNTtest,butall
4、BCVisolatesweresimilar.TwomonoclonalantibodiespreparedagainstoneoftheBCVstrainsdistinguishedHCVinallthreeassays,anddetectedvaryingrelationshipsbetweenBCVstrains.IntroductionMembersoftheCoronaviridaeareassignedtoasmallnumberofserologicalgroups.Humancoronavi
5、rus(HCV-OC43),haemagglutinatingencephalomy-elitisvirus(HEV)andbovinecoronavirus(BCV)formonesuchgroup[2,9,17].TherehasbeennoextensiveserologicalcomparisonofBCVstrainsorinvestigationsintotheextentoftheirrelationshipwithothermembersofthisgroup.BCVstrainsMandP
6、Qpossessedsimilarphysicochemicalandbiologicalproperties[3],butdifferedbycounterimmuno-electrophoresisandimmuno-diffusion[4].FourBritishisolates,1fromtheenterictractand3fromtherespiratorytract,werecomparedbyaneutralisation(NT)testusingpigantiseratothreeofth
7、eseisolates.Therewascompletevirusneutralisationwithho-mologousseraandsignificantcross-reactionswithheterologoussera[14].SlightvariationinmolecularweightofthestructuralproteinsofBCVstrainswerereported[5,7,10,12].Inthisstudy,acomprehensiveserologicalcomparis
