2、ngencephalomyelitis(SDE).Animalssurvivingthisinfectionmaydeveloparelapsingcourseaccompaniedbyoldandfreshdemyelinatinglesions.Theageoftheanimal,thetimeofinfection,theresponseoftheimmunesystem,thegeneticbackgroundofthehostaswellasthepropertiesofthevirusmutantusedforinfectiondetermin
3、etheoutcomeanddevelopmentoftheCNSdiseaseprocess.Ofparticularinterestisthefindingthatspleencellsfromdiseasedratsaresensitizedagainstmyelinbasicprotein(MBP)andadoptivetransferofsuchcellscausesCNSchangessimilartoexperimentalallergicence-phalomyelitis(EAE).Inaddition,ratswhichdevelopa
4、remissionofSDEareresistanttosubsequentinductionofEAEwhenchallengedwithMBP.AnalysisofcerebrospinalfluidfromratsatdifferentstagesofthediseaserevealintrathecalIgGsynthesiswhichareinpartspecificforcoronavirusantigen.Thesedataindicatethatinthecourseofcoronavirusinfectioninratsanautoimm
