4、iseasewerecorrelatedwiththespatialandtemporaldistributionofviraltranscriptsandtheexpressionofoligodendrocyte-specificgenes(myelinbasicprotein,proteolipidprotein,myelin-associatedglycoprotein,and2',3'cyclicnucleotide3'-phosphohydrolase)inthespinalcordofdisea
5、sedmice.Threedistinctphasesinthediseasewereidentified.Inthefirstphase,1weekpostinfection(1WPI),virusreplicationwaswidespreadinbothgrayandwhitematterbutwaspreferentiallyoccurringinglialcells.Intheventralanddorsalrootzoneswhereviraltranscriptsweremostabundant
6、,allmyelingenetranscriptsweredecreasedbeforedemyelinationwasseen.Duringthesecondphaseofthedisease(2-3WPI),viraltranscriptsdecreasedinabundanceandbecamerestrictedtothewhitematter.Numerousdemyelinatinglesionswereobservedandwerecharacterizedbyinflammatorycells
7、,paucityofoligodendrocytes,andaprofounddecreaseofallmyelingenetranscripts.Inthethirdphaseofthedisease(4-6WPI)noviraltranscriptsweredetected,andremyelinationbegan.Inthelesionsandthetissuesurroundingthem,transcriptsofallmyelingenesincreasedtolevelsabovenormal
8、.Theincreasedexpressionofmyelingenetranscriptsoccurredinasynchronizedmannerandwithacellulardistributionreminiscentofthatseenindevelopmentalmyelination.Thesemoleculareventscorrelatedwithefficientremyeli
