3、ycausesanacuteencephalitiswheninoculatedicinto2-day-oldWistarFurthrats.Incontrast,JHMgenerallyproducesachronicdemyelinatingdiseasewithresultingposteriorparalysiswheninoculatedicintolo-day-oldWistarFurthrats.Inaddition,whileJHMreadilyproducesaproductiveinfectioninamousefibroblastcellline(
4、L-2),itdoesnotformsyncytiaorreplicatewellinatissuecelllineofglialorigin(G26-24).WehaveisolatedandcharacterizedthreeMHV-JHMviralvariantsfromthecentralnervoussystemoftwoWistarFurthratswithaMHVJHM-induceddemyelinatingdisease.Thepatternofviral-specificmRNAforallthreeofthesevariantsdifferedfr
5、omwhatwasobservedforthewild-typeparentalMHV-JHMthathadbeenpassagedonlyintissueculture.Oneofthesevariants,ATllfcordvirus,whichinducedachronicdemyelinatingdiseasein2-orlo-day-oldintracerebrallyinoculatedWistarFurthrats,hadadeletioninthecodingregionofthepeplomerglycoproteinmRNA.Inaddition,t
6、hisvariantformedmassivesyncytiaandreplicatedwellinG26-24cells.WehavenotdetectedthisdeletionintheothertwoJHMvariants,ATllfbrainvirusandATlIebrainvirus.ATllfbrainvirusandATlIebrainvirusprimarilyproducedanacuteencephalitiswhenreinoculatedinto2-or1O-day-oldWistarFurthrats.Inaddition,thesetwo
