3、clesinbothnormalanddiarrheastoolsofolderanimals,whereasstoolsfromnonweanedanimalsrarelycontainedthesecoronavirus-likeparticles.IntroductionAnumberofinfectiousagentsareresponsiblefortheclinicalcondition"diar-rhea"or"gastroenteritis".Incertaininstancestheetiologyisknown,i.e.,variouso
4、rganismssuchasbacteria,parasites,orviruses,butthespecificcauseofthevastmajorityofthisentityisstillunknown.Severalviralagentsotherthanthosepreviouslyrecognizedaresuspectedandanumberoflaboratoriesareengagedinexaminingthepossiblerelationshipofvirusestogastroenteritis.Inourattemptstoes
5、tablishananimalmodelforstudiesofthisdisease,wehavebeenexaminingthenonhumanprimatetoascertainwhat~druses:maybefoundintheintestinaltractof"normal"animalsaswellasanimalswithdiarrhea(14,15).Ofthevariousvirusescurrentlysuspectedofbeingetiologicallyassociatedwiththissyndrome,rotaviruses,
6、coronavirusesandtheNorwalkagentareleadingca.ndidates.Inapreviousstudywedidnotfindelectronmicroscopicevidenceforarelationshipwiththerotaviruses(15).Inasmuchastherewassomeevidenceforthepresenceofcoronavirusesintheseanimals,weturnedourattentiontothisgroupofagents.Coronavirusesorcorona
7、virus-likeparticleshavebeenobservedinavarietyofanimalfecesincludingthatfrombirds,calves,pigs,cats,dogs,rodents(23),foals(2),humans(3,5)andsimians(i,4,16).Coronaviruseshavealsobeenshowntocausegastroenteritisinrodents(18),calves(20),andpigs(9,22).Inthisreportwedescribeourfindingswith
