3、rthefutureworld.Thepaceatwhichdemographictransitiondevelopsvariesamongcountriesandregionsoftheworld,butmostofthedevelopedanddevelopingcountrieswillbechallengedbyincreasingnumbersofdependentindividuals.Thisisparticularlycriticalintheless-developedcountrieswher
4、eolderpopulationswillincreasesubstantiallyfaster.Itisexpectedthatbytheyear2000,LatinAmericaandtheCaribbeanwillhave41millionelderly,7.2%ofthetotalpopulation.By2025thispercentagewillincreaseto10.8%.Thestunninggrowthoftheelderlydemandsspecialattentionofpolicyand
5、decision-makers.ThetotaldependencyratiowilldecreaseintheAmericasbetween1980and2025duetoamarkeddecreaseinthefertilityrate,whereasoldagedependencyratioswillshowamarkedincreaseinallcountriesexceptHaitiandSurinam.Mostoftheelderlypopulations,predominantlywomen,are
6、livinginurbancenters.ThisfactisoneofthemostimportantcharacteristicofthesocioeconomicpictureinLatinAmericanandCaribbeancountries:urbanizationwithpooewy.Womenarebearingmainlytheburden.Itisobviousthat,fromaculturalperspective,thesocialimpactofagingpopulationsisa
7、complexissue.Thewiderangeofpossiblefutureprogramswillbetheresultofdifferencesandsimilaritiesinsocialvalues,relationships,anddynamicswithineachsociety.Itisimportanttorecognizethatsincemodernindustrializedsocietiesliveinacultureemphasizingcompetitionforeconomic
