2、isfactionformanyyears,whilesignsofemployeefrustrationandalienationhavebeenin-creasing.Closerexaminationofthisparadoxicalfindingleadstotheconclusionthat,whateverrigorousjobsatisfactionsurveysaremeasuring,itisnottheinformationneededtomodifyjobsandworkinorde

3、rtoreduceemployeefrustration.Toovercomeflawsinthemeasurementofsatisfactionforthispurposeemployeesthemselvesneedtobemoreinvolvedinthemeasurementprocess.Recentexperiencewithemployeeparticipationinactionresearchonqualityofworkinglifeisnoted,andtheextensionan

4、dfurtheranceofthismodelisproposed.Jobsatisfactionasaconcepthasbecomeanembarrassingambiguity.Formanyinvestigatorsinthesocialsciences,aninterestinjobsatisfactionfrequentlyrepresentsaninterestinqualityofworkinglifeandindustrialhumanism,andsuggestsaconcernwit

5、himprovingtheexperienceofpeoplewithjobsandwork.Sincethe1930sthisinteresthasbeenconcernedwithmonitoringthefactorymodelofworkdesignwhichhasbeendiffusedfrommanufacturingintotheserviceandclericalsectors.Itmustbeasserted,however,thatmuchofwhathaspassedforjobsa

6、tisfactionresearchhasfailedtostudythejobortheworkitself.Jobsatisfactionresearchhashistoricallybeenusedeithertosupportortoattackthestatusquo,andthetrendcontinues.Theembarrassmentwithrespecttojob'satisfaction'measurementisthatsurveysofAmericanemployeesconti

7、nuetoshowthatextremelyhighpercentagesofthosemeasuredreportsatisfactionwiththeirjobs,whileatthesametimetheincidenceofdecreasedworkercommitmentasexpressedthroughincreasesinabsenteeism(especiallypart-weekabsenteeism),strikes(forotherreasonsthanwages),employe
