3、dtobegintotreatjobsatisfactioninthecontextofalargerarrayofassociatedvariables.Themeasurementofjobsatisfactionasasocialindicatormayhavethreeroles:(1)torepresentavaluedproductofsociety-acomponentofthepsychologicalGNP;(2)toprovideamonitoringanddiagnosticaidfor’earlywarningofso

4、cietaldislocations,policyorprogramfailure,andslowlydevelopingsocietalchanges;and(3)toprovideasignificantcomponentinthetheoriesandmodelstobeusedintheformulationofsocialpolicyandprograms.Opinionsdifferonhowprominentandhoweffectivejobsatisfactionmeasureswillbeinthesethreeroles

5、.Theutilityofjobsatisfactionmeasuresrestsonthedevelopmentofmultiplemeasurementmethodsthatarestandardized,suitableforwideuse,andcapableofdetectingpopulationdifferencesandpopulationchanges.Inaddition,theutilityrestsuponthesemeasureshavinganagreedconceptualand“realworld”refere

6、nceaswellasaknownmatrixofcausalandconsequentialrelationshipstoothersignificantvariables.Bothrequirementsmustbemetbeforeconvincingproofcanbeadvancedastothepracticalutilityofjobsatisfactionmeasuresforanticipating,understanding,andinfluencingfutureoutcomesofpresentsocietalcond
