4、.IntroductiontothetheoryofregisterSpeakingofvarieties,therearemainlytwokindsofsituationalvarieties:dialectalvarietiesanddiatypicvarieties.Diatypicvarieties,commonlycalledregisters,arelanguagevariationsthatareassociatedwiththedifferentusetowhichtheyareput.Suchvarieti
5、esdonotdependonthepeoplewhousethelanguage,butontheoccasionwhenitisused.Differenttypesoflanguageareselectedasappropriatetodifferenttypesofoccasion.Thechoiceisdeterminedbytheconventionthatacertainkindoflanguageisappropriatetoacertainuse.Theoccasionscanbeclassifiedalon
6、gthreedimensions,eachpresentinganaspectofthesituationandthepartplayedbythelanguageonthem,Inthisway,registersmaybedistinguishedaccordingtofieldofdiscourse,modeofdiscourseandtenorofdiscourse.(Xu,2005:25).Register,inarestrictedsense,referstothevarietyoflanguagerelatedt
