1、LaughingMetaphorically:MetaphorandHumourinDiscourseSakisKyratzisAbstractThecommongroundbetweenfigurativelanguageandhumour(intheformofjokes)iswhatKoestler(1964)termedthebisociationofideas.Inbothjokesandmetaphors,twodisparateconceptsarebroughttogether,butthenatureand
2、thepurposeofthisconjunctionisdifferentineachcase.Thispaperfocusesonthisnotionofboundariesandattemptstogofurtherbyaskingthequestion“whendoesametaphorbecomeajoke?”.Morespecifically,themainresearchquestionsofthepaperare:(a)Howdospeakersusemetaphorindiscourseforhumorou
3、spurposes?(b)Whatarethe(metaphoric)cognitiveprocessesthatrelatetothecreationofhumourindiscourse?(c)Whatdoesthestudyofhumourindiscourserevealaboutthenatureofmetaphoricity?Thispaperanswersthesequestionsbyexaminingexamplestakenfromathree-hourconversation,andconsidersh
4、owlinguistictheoriesofhumour(Raskin,1985;AttardoandRaskin,1991;Attardo,1994;2001)andcognitivetheoriesofmetaphorandblending(LakoffandJohnson,1980;FauconnierandTurner,2002)canbenefitfromeachother.BoundariesinHumourandMetaphorThegoalofthispaperistoexploretherelationsh
5、ipbetweenmetaphor(and,moregenerally,blending)andhumour,inordertoattainabetterunderstandingofthecognitiveprocessesthatareinvolvedorevencontributetolaughterindiscourse.Thissectionwillpresentbrieflyresearchinbothareasandwillidentifypossiblecommongroundbetweenthetwo.Mo
6、respecifically,thenotionofboundarieswillbeexploredinbothareas.Thefollowingsectionexploreshowmetaphorcanbeusedforhumorouspurposesindiscoursebyapplyingrelevanttheoriesofhumourandmetaphortoconversationaldata.Linguistictheoriesofhumourhighlighttheimportanceofdualityand
