1、Revisitingmetaphortypesasdiscoursestrategies:thecaseofpsychotherapeuticdiscourse*DENNISTAYAbstractAquestionnotoftenaskedinmetaphorresearchistheextenttowhichdif-ferentmethodologies,aimedatinvestigatingdifferentaspectsofmetaphor,canbebroughttogetherproductively.OnerecentexceptionisWee(2005a),

2、whichrecastsmodelsofmetaphorprocessingasproductionstrategiesfacilitatingdiscourseobjectivescharacteristicofparticulardiscoursegenres.ThisarticlecomplementsandrefinesWee’sanalysisbyexamininginstancesofpsychotherapeuticdiscourse.Iarguethatthedemandingna-tureandinterpersonaldynamicsofpsychothe

3、rapeutictalkdefinediscourseobjectivesthatcannotbestraightforwardlyalignedwithparticularmeta-phorstrategies.Instead,discourseobjectivesareshiftingandpragmati-callymodulatedinwaysthatarereflectedinmoreintricatepatternsofmetaphordeployment.Byanalyzingtheco-occurrenceofdiscoursemarkersandotherl

4、inguisticfeatureswiththesemetaphors,Ialsosuggesthowtheprevailingemphasisonsignalingmetaphoricityindiscoursepersecanbefruitfullyexpandedtoincludetheanalysisoftheseco-occurringfeatures,or“contextualizationcues,”withintheentirediscoursecontext.Iconcludebydiscussingtheimplicationsofmyfindingsfo
