3、getdomains','invariance','mappings',andsoforthhavebecomeacommon,thoughnotuniversal,vocabularyfordiscussingthelinguisticandconceptualphenomenaofmetaphor.Thefindingsandprinciplesofthisframeworkhavebeenappliedinnumerousstudies,bothwithinandoutsideofthefieldofling
4、uistics.Amorerecentframework,proposedbyFauconnierandTurner(1994;1998)seekstoexplainmuchofthesamelinguisticdata,andalsotounifytheanalysisofmetaphorwiththeanalysisofavarietyofotherlinguisticandconceptualphenomena.Thisframework�referredtovariouslyasthetheoryof'bl
5、ending','conceptualblending',and'conceptualintegration'�sharesmanyaspectsofconceptualmetaphortheory(CMT).Forinstance,bothapproachestreatmetaphorasaconceptualratherthanapurelylinguisticphenomenon;bothinvolvesystematicprojectionoflanguage,imageryandinferentialst
6、ructurebetweenconceptualdomains;bothproposeconstraintsonthisprojection;andsoforth.However,therearealsoimportantdifferencesbetweentheapproaches:CMTpositsrelationshipsbetweenpairsofmentalrepresentations,whileblendingtheory(BT)allowsformorethantwo;CMThasdefinedme
7、taphorasastrictlydirectionalphenomenon,whileBThasnot;and,whereasCMTanalysesaretypicallyconcernedwithentrenchedconceptualrelationships(andthewaysinwhichtheymaybeelaborated),BTresearchoftenfocusesonnovelconceptualizationswhichmaybeshort-lived.Inthisarticleweexpl
8、oretherelationshipbetweenBT,CMTandthephenomenatheyaddress,arguingthatthetwoapproachesarecomplementary.Inparticular,thecross-domainrelationshipswhichhavebeenidentifiedbyCMTresearche
