2、ualityofinterpretingvariousaspects,includingquestionnairesurveysandempiricalstudiesfromthevieostallresearchesconcludedthatfluencyostimportantfactorsintheassessmentofinterpretingquality;infact,fluencyisusuallythefirstimpressionanceiscloselylinkedtotheabsenceofsilentandfilledpauses,repeats,restru

3、cturing,andfalsestarts.Amongthefourelementsmentionedabove,pausescanberegardedasatriggeroftheotherthree.AccordingtoCecot(2001),pausesare“silentintervalsofvariabledurationlocatedbetentalprocess.Yetsomeresearchers(Chambers,1997;Chafe,1985)arguedthatpauseisanormalphenomenoninlanguageproduction,prev

4、ailinginbothfirstandsecondlanguagecontexts.Chambers(1997)mentionedpausesthisorelikelytohesitateinar,thaninaroutineeverydayexchange.Silencesorpausesinthemidstofanutteranceindicatevariouskindsofsearches,fromsearchingforanidea,orforthebestmaticalform.oreover,thesestudiesultaneousinterpreting(Tissi

5、,2000;Cecot,2001);odeofinterpretationwhichinvolvesreadingawrittensourcetextandthendeliveringtarget-languag-->esentencesorally(Agrifoglio,2004:44),receivedlittleattentionintranslationandinterpretationstudies,sinceithasnotbeenfrequentlydemandedbytheprofessionalmarket.Hoanyofficialoccasions,suchas

6、apresidentialinauguration,UNconferences,orinternationalsummitmeeting,interpretersarenormallygivenspeechtextsinadvancetoavoidmisinterpretinganyinterpretingtrainingschoolsatentrancetest,andalsoisaddedintheircurriculumasanintroductorycoursetosimultaneousinterpreting.Ifpauseprovedtobeafactorintheas
