1、LanguageLearningStrategyUseInPalestineAbstractThisstudyreportsonthecurrentEnglishlanguagelearningstrategiesusedbyArabic-speakingEnglish-majorsenrolledatAn-NajahNationalUniversityinPalestine.Thesubjectsofthestudywere(99)maleandfemalestudentsstillstudyingfortheirB.A.degree.Thestudyalsoinvestigates
2、thefrequencyofstrategiesuseamongthesestudentsaccordingtogenderandproficiencyvariables.Proficiencyisreflectedbystudents'learninglevel(i.e.,sophomore,junior,senior),self-reportedproficiencyinEnglish(i.e.,thestudents'universityaverageinEnglishcourses)andlanguageself-efficacy(i.e,.howgoodthestudents
3、perceivedthemselvesasEnglishlearners).TheresultsofthisstudyshowedthatAn-NajahEnglishmajorsusedlearningstrategieswithhightomediumfrequency,andthatthehighestrank(79.6%)wasforMetacognitivestrategieswhilethelowest(63%)wasforcompensationstrategies.Ingeneral,theresultsshowedthatgenderandproficiencyhad
4、nosignificantdifferencesontheuseofstrategies.Basedonthesefindings,theresearcherrecommendsthatmoretrainingshouldbegiveninusingCognitive,MemoryandCompensationstrategiesbyembeddingthemintoregularclassroomactivities.IntroductionWithinthefieldofeducationduringthelasttwodecades,agradualbutsignificants
5、hifthastakenplace,resultinginlessstressonteachersandteachingandgreateremphasisonlearnersandlearning(Nunan,1988).Oneconsequenceofthisshiftwasanincreasingawarenessandinterestinresourcesforlearningstylesandlanguagelearningstrategiesinforeignandsecondlanguageteachingandlearning.ResearcherssuchasOxfo
6、rd(1990a);Cohen(1987);andO'MallayandChamot(1990)havestressedthateffectivelearnersuseavarietyofdifferentstrategiesandtechniquesinordertosolveproblemsthattheyfacewhileacquiringorproducingthelanguage.OnefocusofresearchintheareaofEFLhasbeenthatoftheidentificationofhowlearnersprocessnewinformationand
