2、hite(1995,1999)andHurdetal.(2001),themajorityofresearchislocatedwithinaclassroomlearningsituation.ThispaperexploresdilemmasposedinthedesignofSIforadultslearningarangeoflanguagesinadistancelearningcontext.RecentapproachestoSIarereviewedandattemptstoresolvetheissuesdescribed.Itapp
3、earsthattheabsenceoflanguage-specifictasksinwhichtocontextualisetheSIislessproblematicthantheabsenceofteachermediationtoscaffoldLearnerSelfManagement.[-1-]IntroductionAnincreasinglyderegulatedglobaleconomywithitsneedforaflexiblelabourmarkethasledtogreateremphasison"facilitatinga
4、ccesstolifelonglearning"(CounciloftheEuropeanUnion,2001,p.11).ThisfactorcombinedwiththeforthcomingexpansionoftheEuropeanUniontoincludetennewnationsislikelytomeanagrowthindemandforlanguagelearningopportunitiesamongstadultsnolongerinfull-timeeducation.Becauseadultlearnersmayhaveto
5、fittheirlanguagelearningintoexistingworkcommitments,distancelearningmaybeanattractiveoption.TheINSTALproject(IndividualisingStrategiesforAdultLearnersinLanguageandICT-Learning)wasestablishedin2000,undertheEuropeanCommission'sGrundvigProgrammeforAdultEducation.Itbringstogethertwe
6、ntythreeresearchersandteachersfromacrosstheEUinaseriesofregularmeetingsinvariousEUlocations(afulllistofparticipantsisprovidedattheendofthepaper).Theaimistoexplorehowtosupportadultlearnersatdiverselevelsofcompetence,tacklingarangeofdifferentlanguages,andwhoseaccesstocomputertechn
7、ologyandthemostrecenttextbooksmightbelimited.Itsetsouttocomplementanyresourcesthelearnershavetohandbydesigningahandbookthatenablesthemtoexploitthoseresourcesmoreeffectively.ACDROMisalsobeingdevelopedalongsidethehandbook.Considerationsastowhatismostappropriatelydeliveredthroughth
