2、usthatresultedinthedeathsoftwopeopleearlierthisyear,andtoassistwithfurtherepidemiologicsurveillance.AsofNovember30,2012,thenumberoflaboratory-confirmedcasesofthenewvirushasrisentonine,sincetheoriginaltwocaseswerereportedinJordaninApril2012.InadditiontothetwooriginalcasesinJordan,botho
3、fwhichwerefatal,fivecases(threedeaths)havebeenreportedinSaudiArabiaandtwocasesinQatar.TherehavebeenfearsthatthenewcoronavirusmaybesimilartotheSevereAcuteRespiratorySyndrome(SARS)virus,astheyaredistantlyrelated,butcurrentevidencesuggeststhatthenewvirusisnoteasilytransferablefrompersont
4、operson.However,thetwosmallclustersofinfectionsinSaudiArabiaandJordansuggestthatlimitedhuman-to-humantransmissionmightbepossible.TheupdatedWHOrecommendations,publishedonDecember3,2012,suggestthatpeoplewhohaveanunidentifiedacuterespiratoryinfection,whichmayincludefeverandcough,whoaresu
5、spectedtohavepneumoniaorAcuteRespiratoryDistressSyndrome,andwhoeitherliveintheArabianPeninsulaorhavetravelledtherewithintheprevious10daysshouldbeinvestigatedandtestedforpossibleinfectionwiththenewcoronavirus.Laboratoryassaysforthevirushavebeendevelopedandareavailableforthispurpose.The
6、WHOguidelinesalsosuggestthatanycontactsorhealthcareworkerswhofallillafterextendedcontactwithpatientssuspectedtohavethenewcoronavirusshouldbetested.Inadditiontotheacuterespiratorysymptomsassociatedwiththisvirus,fiveoftheninepatientsdevelopedacuterenalfailure.TheWHOandlocalauthoritiesha
7、vebeencloselymonitoringthesituationandaretryingtodeterminethesourceoftheinfectionandtherouteofexposureofthoseinfected.Noanimal-to-humanlinkhasbeenestablishedtodate,andthesmallnumberofcasessuggeststhatthevirusdoesnoteasilytransferfrompersontoperson.Therefore,basedoncurrentdata,theWHOdo
