1、6Grouptheory6.1IntroductionGroupTheoryisoneofthemostpowerfulmathematicaltoolsusedinQuantumChemistryandSpectroscopy.Itallowstheusertopredict,interpret,rationalize,andoftensimplifycomplextheoryanddata.Grouptheorycanbeconsideredthestudyofsymmetry.Grouptheoryisabasicstructureofmodernalgebra,consistingo
2、fasetofelementsandanoperation.Grouptheoryisthesubjectofintensestudywithinmathematics,andisusedinmanyscientificfields.e.g.,groupsareusedinchemistrytodescribethesymmetriesofmolecules,andtheLorentzgroupisacentralpartofspecialrelativity.Also,thetheoryofgroupsplaysacentralroleinparticlephysics,whereitha
