1、RichardMenaryEmbodiedNarrativesIntroductionIstheselfnarrativelyconstructed?Therearemanywhowouldansweryestothequestion.Dennett(1991)is,perhaps,themostfamouspro-ponentoftheviewthattheselfisnarrativelyconstructed,butthereareothers,suchasVelleman(2006),whohavefollo
2、wedhisleadanddevelopedtheviewmuchfurther.Indeed,theimportanceofnarrativetounderstandingthemindandtheselfiscurrentlybeinglavishedwithattentionacrossthecognitivesciences(Dautenhahn,2001;Hutto,2007;Nelson,2003).Emergingfromthiswork,thereappeartobeavarietyofwaysinw
3、hichwecanthinkofthenarrativeconstructionoftheselfandtherelationshipbetweenthenarrativeselfandtheembod-iedagent.Iwishtoexaminetwosuchwaysinthispaper.ThefirstIshallcalltheabstractnarrativeaccount,thisisbecauseitsproponentstakethenarrativeselftobeanabstraction(Den
4、nett,1991;Velleman,2006).Dennett,forexample,referstotheselfasacentreofnarrativegravity(henceforthCNG),tobethoughtofasanalogoustoamathematicalconceptionofthecentreofgravityofanobject.ThesecondIshallcalltheembodiednarrativeaccountandthisistheviewthattheselfiscon-
5、stitutedbothbyanembodiedconsciousnesswhoseexperiencesareavailablefornarrationandnarrativesthemselves,whichcanplayavarietyofrolesintheagent’spsychologicallife.Kerby(1993,p.42)describesourembodiedexperiencesashavingapre-narrativequalitythatconstitutes‘ademandforn
