3、nsarebecomingmuchmoreThinkaboutthewiderangeofmaterialsandproductsusedinconstructingourimportantinrelativeterms.Thegraphsbelowshowstypicaldataforthebuildingstoday.Theyaremadebyextractionofrawmaterials,processed,embodiedandoperationalenergyfortwodifferentlevelsoftypicalmanufactured,

4、transportedtosite,andconstructedasthefinishedbuilding–the1constructionfornewhomesoveralifetimeof60years.energyassociatedwithallthesestepsandprocessesiswhatmakesuptheembodiedenergyofthebuildinganditsmaterials.Thiscanalsobeexpressedintermsofthecarbondioxideemissionsassociatedwiththi

5、sembodiedenergy,definingthetermembodiedcarbon.Theotherenergyusageassociatedwithourbuildingsisthatusedinrunningthebuildingservicesandotherequipmentinthebuildingoveritslifetime–thisisknownastheoperationalenergyconsumptionforthebuilding.Theassociatedoperationalcarbonemissionsfromtheb

6、uildingservicesarethebasisofBuildingRegulationsPartL(seeTBN19).Theembodiedenergy,andtheoperationalenergyforthebuildingoveritswholelife,canbeaddedtogethertocreateawhole-lifecarbonfootprintforthebuilding,perhapsthemostcomprehensivewaytolookattheenvironmentalimpactoftheenergyandcarbo
