2、er(CEO)ofanaviationcorporation.Inmoredetail,itsaimistodeterminethenumberofticketswhichareoverbookedtoachievethemaximumpossibleeconomicprofitwhiletakingvarious(economicandsocial)factorsintoconsideration.Firstofall,themutualrelationshipamongtheelementssuchasprofit,tick
3、et-price,numberofpassengers,possibilityofbooking-and-arriving,andthemaximumnumberofticketswhicharepermissibletoreserve,isrevealed.Basedonthis,threetypicalmathematicalmodelsareproposed,whichareexposedoneafteranotherbelow.Thefirstmodel,whichisthesimplestone,aimssimplya
4、tmaximizingthesingle-airlinerprofitrateforthesingle-pricesituation.Consideringthenumberofpassengersasarandomvariable,thismodelmakesuseoftheaverageprofit(i.e.,mathematicalexpectation)asthemeasureoftheprofitrate.Basedonthismodel,wediscussthreetypicalstrategiesofhowtopa
5、ythepassengerswhohavebookedaspecificairlinerbuthavetogiveuptherightfortakingthatairlinerduetothelimitedtransportationcapacityoftheairplane,respectively.Althoughthefirstmodelprovidesagoodstarting-pointforfurtherstudy,thoroughanalysisindicatesthatitdeviatesfromrealsitu
6、ationstoacertainextent.Duetothisandreferringtothemultiple-pricestrategywhichiscommonlyusedbymostaviationcorporations,amodelispresentedbasedondouble-pricestrategywhichissimplificationofmultiple-pricestrategy.Inordertoreducetheeconomiclossincurredbythecompensationforth
7、ebooking-but-not-arrivingcustomers,thismodeldividesallticketsintotwoclasses:full-price-ticketwithwhichthecustomercanacquirepreferentialtreatmentsofsomesortsuchaschoosingtotakelaterairlinerwhenheorshemissesthereservedflight,anddiscount-price-ticket,withwhichthereisnoa
