2、Selement.InmycaseIonlydiscoveredTSbyaccidentin1997ataconferenceinStrasburg,Franceonmultimediatranslation.SponsoredbyanagencyoftheEuropeanUnion,theconferenceintroducedmetosomeofthefoundersandleadersofTS,especiallythoseconnectedwiththeLouvain,Belgium-basedCentreforCommunication,Culture,andTranslation(
3、CETRA).IrecallleavingStrasburgdeeplymovedbythesincereinterestandwarmreceptionthattheTScolleagueshadgivenBiblescholarshipingeneralandmediatranslationinparticular.MyStrasburgexperienceprovidedakindof“awakening”formeasIrealizedthatBibletranslationhadhistorical,theoretical,andpracticaltieswithTSthathadp
4、artlyfadedfromview.IalsofeltthatthefascinationandappreciationoftheStrasburgcolleaguesforBibletranslationandscholarshiphadopenedupdoorsforcollaborationandmutuallearning.PartlythisTSfascinationandappreciationfortheBiblestemmedfromthe“newness”ofTSandtheantiquityofBibletranslation,partlyfromtheglobalspr
5、eadofBibleworkandfromtheastonishingrangeofdatawebringfromthefield.ToaddtomydelightIhaddiscoveredthatEugeneNidaheldapositionofgreathonoramongTScolleagues,partlyasaBiblescholarandtranslator,partlyasalinguist,partlyasapolymathwhoseowninterdisciplinaryapproachtotranslationmatchedtheinterdisciplinaryappr
6、oachofTS.UponreturninghomefromStrasburg,IflippedthroughthewritingsofNidatolearnmoreabouthowNida’sworldhadintersectedwiththatofTS.AlthoughIdon’trecallfindinganyreferencetoTSassuchinNida’swork,IdidfindmanyreferencestoscholarsassociatedwithTS.Nidaknewandtreasured,forexample,theworkofKatarinaReisandHans
7、Vermeer,twoGermantranslationscholarsandteacherswhodevelopedwhatisknownasskopostheory,anapproachtotranslatingthatfocusedontherequirementsofthetargetaudienceandlanguage,especiallyontheneedtoreproduceint
