3、andimmunologyasatooltoidentify,countandexaminemarinephytoplanktoncellsarereviewed.Theconceptsofimmunologyandflowcytometryaredescribed.Adis-tinctionismadebetweenquantitativeandqualitativeimmunofluorescence.Quantitativeimmunofluorescence,theidentifi-cat
4、ionandenumerationofphytoplanktoncells,istheresearchareathathasadvancedrapidlyinthepastdecade,andisreviewedextensively.Keystepsofquantitativeimmunofluorescence,fixationandimmunolabelintensity,arediscussedinmoredetail.Qualitativeimmunofluorescenceisanew
5、,hardlyexploredbuthighlyinterestingdevelopmentinwhichquali-tative-physiological-variablesrelatedtoe.g.nutrientlimitationorprimaryproductionaremeasuredinindividualcellsinsteadofphytoplanktonpopulationsasawhole.Severalcombinationsofimmunologicalprobes,b
6、othforspeciesidentifi-cationandforphysiologicalmeasurements,areproposed.Aspecialcaseofqualitativeimmunofluorescenceisthemea-surementofphytoplanktontoxinsinsinglecellsfromnaturalpopulations.Itisanticipatedthatthefutureuseofsemicon-ductornanocrystalsor“
