2、irmothertongue,Chinesetranslatorsoftenusesomeawkwardexpressions,whichdonotexistinEnglish,inthetranslatedtexts.ThispaperaimstoexplorehowacomparablecorpuscanbeappliedinChinese-EnglishtranslationtoassistnativeChinese-speakingtranslatorstomaketheirtranslatedtextssoundnaturaltonativeEnglish
3、speakers.Toillustratethepoint,acomparablecorpusonthesubjectofcityintroductionisconstructed.Withthehelpofcomparablecorpusanalysistools,sentencelength,lexicaldensity,andotherstatisticswhichcanreflectthestylisticfeaturesofthetranslatedtextsarederived.Itisarguedthatacomparablecorpuswhichca
4、nprovideexamplesofnaturalexpressionsinthetargetlanguageplaysanirreplaceableroleinterminologyextraction,awkwardcollocationspottinganditisalsocanpickupsomesmallerrorswhichareoftenneglectedbynon-nativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorssuchastheusageofarticles.Introductionntermsoftheprerequisites
5、oftranslators,theidealcandidateswouldbethenativespeakersofthetargetlanguage.ThisguidelineisfollowedbymanytranslationagenciesforInternationalinstitutes.ItisalsoclearlystatedintheOccupationalOutlookHandbookoftheU.S.DepartmentofLaborthatthenatureoftranslationisforthetranslatorstoputtheirs
6、econdary,orpassivelanguageintotheirnative,oractivelanguage.However,thisisnotthecaseinChinese-Englishtranslation.AccordingtoXuMeijiang(2004),aseniortranslatorinChina'sCentralTranslationBureau,thoughsomequalifiednativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsareinvolvedinC-Etranslating,editingorproofr
7、eading;largevolumesofC-EtranslationsaredonebynativeChinese-speakingtranslatorsalone.Thepresentsituationwillnotbechangedinthenearfuturefortworeasons:first,onlyalimitedpoolofqualifiednativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsareavailable;second,thefeechargedbynativeEnglish-speakingtranslatorsis
