1、Language Context and the English TeachingThestudentsarerequiredtotransferwhattheylearnedinthetextbooktoreal-lifesituationasfaraspossible．Andinthepresent-daytextbookofMiddleSchool，thecoursesareorganizedinauthenticeverydaysituationsinwhichstudentscaneasilyidentify．SointheprocessofEnglishteaching，itisv

2、eryimportantfortheteacherstosetthelanguagecontextscorrectlyandflexibly．Ⅰ．ThemeaningsofthelanguagecontextGenerallyspeaking，thelanguagecontextcanbedividedintotwomajortypes：situationalcontextandsocioculturalcontext．Riverssuggeststhatitemsoflanguageintotalisolationhavenofunction;theyneedasystemandasetti

3、ngtogivethembothfunctionandmeaning．Childrenoftenaskforthemeaningofawordinisolation，withoutseeingtheneedtoprovideanythingforit;tooquickandtoocasualareplycanoftenhaveunexpectedconsequences．eg．Whenthechildaskswhatcricketisandyousayitisagame，andthendiscoverthatitwasa“cricket”inthecontextofinsects．Evenif

4、weknowthestrictlinguistics，westillneedtocheckfurtherintothesituationandevenintothesocietyandculturetobesureofwhatitemofthelanguageisappropriateoracceptable．Inanarrowsense，thelanguagecontextmeansthesituationalcontext．InHalliday’sopinion，thesituationalcontextsincludethesetting，thewayoftalking，andparti

5、cipants．ButHymesdividesitintoeightelements：setting，role，function，notion，style，stressandintonation，grammar，vocabularyandlanguageaids．Thosefactorsaffecteachotheranddecidewhichlanguageformisappropriate．Thesituationalcontextandsocioculturalcontextcan’tbeisolatedfromeachother．Incertainsocioculturalcontex

6、t，peoplemustobeytheparticularcommunicativeruleswhentheyuseacertainlanguage．Andinacertainsituationalcontext，peopleshouldnotonlypayattentiontothesocialcommunicationrulesbutalsoadjustthemselvesaccordingtothefactorsofthesituationalcontext．Thatis，thesituationalcontextandsocioculturalcontextaffecteachothe
