3、ents,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecausewe,thepeople,haveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforebearsandtruetoourfoundingdocuments.Soithasbeen;soitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans.Thatweareinthemidstofcrisis
4、isnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwaragainstafar-reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,a12consequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlos
5、t,jobsshed,businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly,ourschoolsfailtoomany--andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourplanet.Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurable,butnol
6、essprofound,isasappingofconfidenceacrossourland;anaggingfearthatAmerica'sdeclineisinevitable,thatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights.TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortspanoftime.Butkn
