2、Washington,D.C.Myfellowcitizens:Istandheretodayhumbledbythetaskbeforeus,gratefulforthetrustyouhavebestowed,mindfulofthesacrificesbornebyourancestors.IthankPresidentBushforhisservicetoournation,aswellasthegenerosityandcooperationhehasshownthroughoutt
3、histransition.Forty-fourAmericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoath.Thewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.Yet,everysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms.Atthesemoments,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butb
4、ecauseWethePeoplehaveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforebears,andtruetoourfoundingdocuments.Soithasbeen.SoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans.Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwaragainstafar-reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreed
5、andirresponsibilityonthepartofsomebutalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlost,jobsshed,businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly,ourschoolsfailtoomany,andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourplanet.
6、Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurable,butnolessprofound,isasappingofconfidenceacrossourland;anaggingfearthatAmerica’sdeclineisinevitable,thatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights.TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal,theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbeme
7、teasilyorinashortspanoftime.ButknowthisAmerica:Theywillbemet.Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverfear,unityofpurposeoverconflictanddiscord.Onthisday,wecometoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepromises,therecriminationsandworn-outdogmasthatforfartoolonghavestrangledourpolitics.Weremain
