3、reallyare.Intheeyesofmanyintheworld,thisevery-4-yearceremonyweacceptasnormalisnothinglessthanamiracle. Mr.President,Iwantourfellowcitizenstoknowhowmuchyoudidtocarryonthistradition.Byyourgraciouscooperationinthetransitionprocess,youhaveshownawatchingworldthatweareaunitedp
4、eoplepledgedtomaintainingapoliticalsystemwhichguaranteesindividuallibertytoagreaterdegreethananyother,andIthankyouandyourpeopleforallyourhelpinmaintainingthecontinuitywhichisthebulwarkofourRepublic. Thebusinessofournationgoesforward.TheseUnitedStatesareconfrontedwithanec
5、onomicafflictionofgreatproportions.Wesufferfromthelongestandoneoftheworstsustainedinflationsinournationalhistory.Itdistortsoureconomicdecisions,penalizesthrift,andcrushesthestrugglingyoungandthefixed-incomeelderlyalike.Itthreatenstoshatterthelivesofmillionsofourpeople. I
6、dleindustrieshavecastworkersintounemployment,causinghumanmiseryandpersonalindignity.Thosewhodoworkaredeniedafairreturnfortheirlaborbyataxsystemwhichpenalizessuccessfulachievementandkeepsusfrommaintainingfullproductivity. Butgreatasourtaxburdenis,ithasnotkeptpacewithpubli
7、cspending.Fordecades,wehavepileddeficitupondeficit,mortgagingourfutureandourchildren'sfutureforthetemporaryconvenienceofthepresent.Tocontinuethislongtrendistoguaranteetremendoussocial,cultural,political,andeconomicupheavals. YouandI,asindividuals,can,byborrowing,livebeyo
