3、hisevery-4-yearceremonyweacceptasnormalisnothinglessthanamiracle. Mr.President,Iwantourfellowcitizenstoknowhowmuchyoudidtocarryonthistradition.Byyourgraciouscooperationinthetransitionprocess,youhaveshownawatchingworldthatweareaunitedpeoplepledgedtomaintai
4、ningapoliticalsystemwhichguaranteesindividuallibertytoagreaterdegreethananyother,andIthankyouandyourpeopleforallyourhelpinmaintainingthecontinuitywhichisthebulwarkofourRepublic. Thebusinessofournationgoesforward.TheseUnitedStatesareconfrontedwithaneconomi
5、cafflictionofgreatproportions.Wesufferfromthelongestandoneoftheworstsustainedinflationsinournationalhistory.Itdistortsoureconomicdecisions,penalizesthrift,andcrushesthestrugglingyoungandthefixed-incomeelderlyalike.Itthreatenstoshatterthelivesofmillionsofou
6、rpeople. Idleindustrieshavecastworkersintounemployment,causinghumanmiseryandpersonalindignity.Thosewhodoworkaredeniedafairreturnfortheirlaborbyataxsystemwhichpenalizessuccessfulachievementandkeepsusfrommaintainingfullproductivity. Butgreatasourtaxburdeni
7、s,ithasnotkeptpacewithpublicspending.Fordecades,wehavepileddeficitupondeficit,mortgagingourfutureandourchildren'sfutureforthetemporaryconvenienceofthepresent.Tocontinuethislongtrendistoguaranteetremendoussocial,cultural,political,andeconomicupheavals. You
