3、ressmythanksforthegreathonorthatyouhavebestowedonme.Iwilldomyutmosttobedeservingofyourtrust.Thisis,asSenatorMathiastoldus,the50thtimethatwethepeoplehavecelebratedthishistoricoccasion.WhenthefirstPresident,GeorgeWashington,placedhishandupontheBible,hestoodlessthanasin
4、gleday'sjourneybyhorsebackfromraw,untamedwilderness.Therewere4millionAmericansinaunionof13States.Todayweare60timesasmanyinaunionof50States.Wehavelightedtheworldwithourinventions,gonetotheaidofmankindwhereverintheworldtherewasacryforhelp,journeyedtotheMoonandsafelyret
5、urned.Somuchhaschanged.Andyetwestandtogetheraswedidtwocenturiesago.WhenItookthisoathfouryearsago,Ididsoinatimeofeconomicstress.Voiceswereraisedsayingwehadtolooktoourpastforthegreatnessandglory.Butwe,thepresent-dayAmericans,arenotgiventolookingbackward.Inthisblessedla
6、nd,thereisalwaysabettertomorrow.5Fouryearsago,Ispoketoyouofanewbeginningandwehaveaccomplishedthat.Butinanothersense,ournewbeginningisacontinuationofthatbeginningcreatedtwocenturiesagowhen,forthefirsttimeinhistory,government,thepeoplesaid,wasnotourmaster,itisourservan
7、t;itsonlypowerthatwhichwethepeopleallowittohave.Thatsystemhasneverfailedus,but,foratime,wefailedthesystem.Weaskedthingsofgovernmentthatgovernmentwasnotequippedtogive.WeyieldedauthoritytotheNationalGovernmentthatproperlybelongedtoStatesortolocalgovernmentsortothepeopl
