2、age;withoutidiomsourlanguagewouldbecomedullanddry,whereas “anappropriateuseoftheminourwritingwilladdtothestrengthandvividnessofourlanguage.”1So,idiomtranslationplaysaveryimportantroleinunderstandingtheforeigncultureandlanguageitself.“Englishidiomisafixedgroupofwordsorasingleword,ore

3、venasentence,withaspecialmeaningthatcannotbeguessedfromitsstructure.”2Idiomsarenotonlythecoreofalanguagebutalsotheintellectualcrystallizationofthecommonpeople.AccordingtotheOxfordAdvancedLearner’sDictionary,idiomis “phraseorsentencewhosemeaningisnotobviousthroughknowledgeoftheindivi

4、dualmeaningoftheconstituentwordsbutmustbelearntasawhole”.Fromthisthecharacteristicsofidiomscanbeconcluded:firstly,themeaningofanidiomisunpredictable.Thatistosay,thedeepmeaningofanidiomisnotthecollectivemeaningofallthewordsthatformit. “meaningcannotbecalculatedbyaddinguptheseparatewo

5、rds”3.Thiscanbefullyillustratedbythefollowingexamples: “cat’spaw”doesnotrefertothepawofacatbutapersonwhohasbeenexploitedorfooledbyothers; “blacksheep”isnotasheepatallbutagood-for-nothingpersoninacertaincommunity.Secondly,idiomsareindivisibleunitsinformwhosecomponentscannotbereplaced

6、byotherwordsonlywithindefinitelimits. “Nootherwordscanbesubstitutedforthosecomprising”.4Forinstance,anativespeakerwillprobablyfeelstrangeifonesays “Onestitchintimesavesnine”insteadof “Astitchintimesavesnine”.Again, “blackhorse”cannotbeusedinplaceof “darkhorse”becauseitdestroystherea
