3、to-subjectraising.ThisphenomenoncanbeaccountedforifweassumethattheEPPdrivesA-movement,andagreementblocksit.MandarinChinesedoesnothavegrammaticalfeatures;asaconsequence,thesubjectofafiniteclausedoesnotperformcheckingofgrammaticalfeatures,andthusisfreetoraise.Thisphenomenon,therefore,isevidence
4、againstthechecking-basedtheoryofA-movement.IffeaturecheckingisinvolvedinraisinginMandarinChinesesentences,extraassumptionsmustbemade,withaheavyburdenofproofonthechecking-basedtheory.1.IntroductionThepurposeofthispaperistwofold.First,itshowsthatclausesinMandarinChinese(henceforthMC)exhibitthe
5、finite/nonfinitecontrast;second,itdemon-stratesthatthelackofgrammaticalfeaturesandtheircheckinginMCmakesextractionofSpec,TPfreer.ThissecondpurposeisofspecialinterestinviewofarecentdebateonthemotivationforA-movement.Chomsky(2000,2001)departsfromearlierframeworks(e.g.,GovernmentandBindingtheory;
6、Chomsky1995)indownplayingtheroleofCaseinthetheoryofmovement.Inearliertheories,CaseisresponsiblefordrivingandblockingA-movement.InChomsky2000,2001,however,theimportanceofCaseisreduced;instead,itisnowassumedthattheEPP(orthe‘‘edgefeature’’asitiscalledinmorerecentworks;e.g.,Chomsky2005)drivesA-m
