2、Laenzlinger2000),thepresentarticlearguesthatbothtypesofmodificationavailableinMandarinChinesehavetobetakenintoaccount:thatwherethesubordinatordeintervenesbetweentheadjectiveandtheheadnoun,‘AdeN',andthecaseofsimplejuxtapositionoftheadjectiveandthenoun‘AN’.Extensiveevidenceisprovidedagainst
3、thewidespreadideathatattributiveadjectivesinMandarinChinesecanbeanalysedasrelativeclausesandthat‘AN’de-lessmodificationstructuresarecompounds(cf.Sproat&Shih1988,1991,Duanmu1998,Simpson2001).Asaconsequence,adjectivescannotbeconflatedwithintransitivestativeverbs,buthavetoberecognizedasasepa
4、ratepartofspeechinMandarinChinese.1.IntroductionAdjectivesareanotoriouslydifficultissueinChineselinguisticsandhavebeenratherneglectedduringthelastdecadesbymoretheoreticallyorientedstudies.Toelucidatethestatusofadjectivesbecomesnecessaryinordertoguaranteethecommensurabilityofthephenomenaex
5、aminedifMandarinChineseistobeincludedintypologicalstudiesofadjectivalmodificationintheDP.ThissubjecthasregainedtheoreticalimportanceduetotheclaimmadebyCinque(1994)andelaboratedbye.g.Scott(1998;2002a,b),Chaoetal.(2001),Laenzlinger(2000)thatthefunctionalhierarchiesintheclauseproposedforadve
6、rbs(cf.Cinque1999andTenny2000)mightbeobservableintheDPaswell.ThecrucialproblemforthiskindofinvestigationwhenappliedtoMandarinChineseistodeterminewhichtypeofmodification,thatwiththesubordinatorde,'adjectivedeN',orthatwithoutde,'adjectiveN',iscomparabletomodificationinlanguageslikeEnglish,F
