3、interpretations,inadditiontotheirdistinctmorphologicalshapes.Thetwoclassesofindefinitesalsodifferintheconditionsunderwhichtheyallowanintermediate-scopereading.N-indefs,liketheEnglishindefinites,showanintermediate-scopereadingonlyinthepresenceofaboundvariableintheirrestriction,andthuspr
4、ovidestrongsupportforananalysisalongthelinesofKratzer1998,whichsinglesoutvariablebindingasoneimportantsourceofintermediatereading,ratherthanthescope-takingpropertiesoftheindefinitesinquestion.Wh-indefs,ontheotherhand,canreceiveanintermediatescopeconstrualindependentlyofthepresenceofabo
5、undvariable;IarguethattheyshouldbeanalyzedasdenotingsetsofHamblin-stylealternatives,followingShimoyama2001.Bothoftheseanalysesattributetheintermediate-scopereadingofindefinitestosomethingotherthanscope:inthecaseofN-Indefs,itisthebindingofavariableintheirrestrictionthatsimulatedscopeint
