3、elativeorderoftopicandfocusprojections.ForinChinese,noTopicPisallowedbelowtheprojectionof‘even’-focus(beitclause-externallyorclause-internally),norisModP,introducedbyRizzi(2002)tohostpreposedadverbs.Thesedifferencesarepartlyduetotheidentificationoftopicwitholdinformation,
4、anequationnotsupportedbytheChinesedata.1.IntroductionThepresentpapertakesasastartingpointtheproposalmadebyBelletti(2003)thatthearchitectureofthedomainbelowIPandabovevPparallelsthatoftheclause-externalleftperiphery.Inparticular,wewillexaminethepositionbetweenIPandvPoccupie
5、dbytheobjectwhennotinitscanonicalpostverbalpositionandwewillargueforitsstatusasaclause-internaltopicposition.ThehierarchyweobtainforChineseisthefollowing:CP>TopicP>‘even’FocusP>IP>innerTopicP>‘even’FocusP>vP.ThiscorrespondsonlypartiallytothehierarchypostulatedbyRizzi(1997
6、;2002),Belletti(2003),especiallywithrespecttotherelativepositioningoftopicandfocusprojections:inChinese,noadditionalTopicPisallowedbelowtheprojectionof‘even’-focus,neitherclause-externallynorclause-internally.Wewilldiscusspossiblereasonsforthisdiscrepancyandprovideextensi
