2、ofrelativeclausesinMandarinChinese.Someauthors(Zhang2001;DelGobbo2003,2004,2005)claimthatrelativeclausesinMandarinChinesecanonlybeinterpretedasrestrictives;others(seeLin2003)insteadmaintainthatrel-ativeclausesinthislanguagecanbebothrestrictiveandappositive.Inthispaper,IclaimthatChineserelat
3、iveclausesmodifyingpropernamesandpronounscanindeedbeappositive,buttheyarestillcruciallydifferentfromappositiverelativeclausesinEnglish.FollowingCinques(2006a,2008a)distinctionbetweeninte-gratedappositiverelativeclausesandnon-integratedones,IclaimthatChineseappositiverelativesbelongtotheclas
4、softheintegratedones.Ifurthermoreproposethatthetypologicaldifferencebetweentheintegratedappositivesandthenon-integratedonesisduetotheabsenceversuspresenceoftherelativepronoun.AdoptingCinques(2006a,2008a)theoryofrelativization,IproposeastructureforChineserelativeclauseswherebyc-commandofthei
5、nternalheadoftherelativeisdisallowed.ThisexplainswhytheinternalheadoftheChineserelativeclausecanneverbegeneratedasarelativepronounand,moregenerally,whyovertrelativepronounsareunavailableinprenominalrelativeclausescross-linguistically.Last,thetheoryhereoutlinedmakesthestrongempiricalpredicti
