3、edonissuesofjusticeandfairness,suggestthatthefullyunderstandingtheoutcomesofcompensationsystemsrequiresexaminingtheirpsychological,social,andmoraleffects.IntroductionCompensationhasalwaysbeenviewedasacentrallyimportantelementinalmostanyemploymentrelationship(Mi
4、lkvichandNewman,2005).Earlyeffortstostudycompensationwedominatedbyeconomicviewsofcompensationsystems.Thepervasiveviewatthattimewasthatoptimalcompensationsystemsmetthe‘‘fairday’swageforafairday’swork’’criteria.Employmentrelationshipswereviewed,forthemostpart,lik
5、emarkettransactionsforlabourthathadbeenbroughtinsidetheskinofafirmororganization.Accordingtothisview,thekeyformanagersandotherswhodesignpaysystemsistoensurethatpayaccuratelyreflectedtheeconomicvaluecontributedtothefirmbyaworker.Here,fairnessisexpressedonlyineco
6、nomicterms.Sincethattime,managementscholarshavedevelopedamuchricherunderstandingofwhatfairnessmeanstoemployeesandhowperceptionsoffairnessaffecttheirattitudesandbehaviors(FolgerandCropanzano,1998).Weknowthatthemeaningoffairnessforemployeesgoeswellbeyondeconomici
7、ssues;italsoincorporatesissuesrelatedtotrust,workrelationships,andethics.Wenowknowthatcompensationsystemsaremuchmorethansimplymechanismsforbringing.markettransactionsforlabourinsideanorganization.Tobesure,compensationsystemscanhelpcreateeffectiveeconomicexchang
