3、nspectionsmoothlyandbeacceptedbymostreaders.NathanielHawthorne’snovelTheScarletLetterhaslongbeenconsideredasaclassicbothathomeandabroad.Publishedin1850,thenoveltellsthestoryabouttheprotagonistHesterPrynne,whoconceivesadaughterthroughanadulterousaffairandtrieshardtostartanewlifeofregretanddignity.Du

4、etoitsimportantpositioninthehistoryofworldliterature,ithasalreadybeentranslatedintomanydifferentkindsofforeignlanguages.Accordingtothematerialsavailable,thereareupto34differentChineseversions.ThepresentstudyattemptstomakeacomparativestudyoftwoChineseversions(HanShiheng’sversionin1954andYaoNaiqiang’

5、sversionin1996)ofTheScarletLetterfromtheperspectiveofManipulationTheory.Throughcomparison,thisthesisholdsthatideologyandpoeticsindifferenthistoricaltimesinfluencetranslators’philosophyoftranslationandtheirtranslationstrategies.Forthesameoriginalworktobetranslated,translatorsofdifferenttimestendtoha

6、veobviousdifferencesintheselectionoflexicon,syntaxandeventhetextstructure.Han’sversionmanifestsmoreaboutthemanipulationofpoliticalideologythanYao’sversion.ButinYao’sversion,thetraceofsocialistideologyisnotthatobvioussincethisversioncameoutunderthespringbreezeofreformandopening-uppolicyblowingacross
