3、etothefuture.Second,thenon-financialmeasurestheyusearegenericandarenotrelatedtospecificstrategicobjectivesthatwillprovidesustainablecompetitiveadvantage.Scorecardsbuiltuponlagging,non-strategicindicatorsrepresentonlyalimitedapplicationofthefullpoweroftheBalancedScorecard.Our
4、experienceinobservingandbuildingmorethan100scorecardsrevealsthatthefinancialandnon-financialmeasuresonaBalancedScorecardshouldbederivedfromthebusiness-unit'suniquestrategy.TheBalancedScorecardprovidesexecutiveswithacomprehensiveframeworkthatcantranslateacompany'svisionandstr
5、ategyintoacoherentandlinkedsetofperformancemeasures.Themeasuresshouldincludebothoutcomemeasuresandtheperformancedriversofthoseoutcomes.Byarticulatingtheoutcomestheorganizationdesiresaswellasthedriversofthoseoutcomes,seniorexecutivescanchanneltheenergies,theabilities,andthesp
6、ecificknowledgeheldbypeoplethroughouttheorganizationtowardsachievingthebusiness'slong-termgoals.Manypeoplethinkofmeasurementasatooltocontrolbehaviorandtoevaluatepastperformance.Traditionalcontrolandperformancemeasurementsystemsattempttokeepindividualsandorganizationalunitsin
