2、ure,incidence,demographicsandotherfactorsofdomesticviolencecannotbeexplainedandresponsestovictims,perpetratorsandchildrenwillusuallybeinadequateandoftenunsafe.Effectiveworkwithperpetratorsandvictimsofdomesticviolencethereforehastoincludeanintegratedunderstandingoftheinfluenceof

3、gender.1.ThemajorityofviolenceingeneraliscommittedbymenViolenceingeneralisstronglygendered:themajorityofperpetratorsofallformsofviolencearemaleKimmel,2004;Powis,2002.Thisdoesnotmeanthatallperpetratorsaremaleorthatallmenareperpetratorsofviolence:themajorityofmenarenotviolentands

4、omewomendouseviolence.However,genderisacriticaldeterminingfactorforwhetherornotsomeonewilluseanyformofviolenceandassumptionsabouttherighttouseviolencearethereforelikelytobeassociatedwithgender.2.Genderisthemostsignificantfactorforbeingaperpetratororvictimofdomesticviolenceinpar

5、ticularViolenceinintimaterelationshipscananddoeshappentoandiscommittedbybothmenandwomen.Respectiscommittedtomeetingtheneedsofbothmaleandfemalevictimsandtorespondingtomaleandfemaleperpetrators.Thiscommitmentincludesrunninganationalhelplineformalevictimsofdomesticviolenceandanadv

6、icelineforperpetratorsofbothgenders.However,theamountofviolenceandtheamountoffearandinjurycreatedbyviolenceinintimaterelationshipsisstronglyrelatedtogender.WomenexperiencethemajorityofincidentsofphysicalviolencewhichtakeplaceinintimaterelationshipsColemanetal,2007;WalbyandAllen

7、,2004(bothfromBritishCrimeSurvey);TjadenandThoennes,2000.WomenmakeupthemajorityofvictimsofsexualviolenceIbid(all).TheyarefarmorelikelythanmalevictimstobeinjuredandtofeartheabuserIbid(all).Themajorityofchroniclongtermvictimsarewomenandfemalevictimsaremorelikelytobeabusedpost-sep
