3、ralandbehavioralperspectivesondecisionmaking.Behavioralperspectivesarguethatperfor-mancerelativetoaspirationsdeterminestheactors’riskpreferenceandmotivationtochange,whilestructuralperspectivessuggestthattheactors’choicesandactionsareenabledandconstrainedbytheopportunitiessurroundingtheirstructu

4、ralpositionstoformexchangerelationswiththeexternalaudiences.Weproposeatheoreticalmodelofhowtheactors’status,distinctiveness,andrelativeperformanceinteracttoinfluencetheirmotivationsandopportunitiestochange,resultingindifferen-tialresponsivenesstorelativeperformanceintermsofthedegreeofchange.Thi

5、smodelisempiricallyexaminedandsupportedinthecontextoftheU.S.featurefilmindustrybetween1986and2006,wherefilmdirectorsdecidethedistancesofchangeinthegenrerepertoiresfortheirnextfilmproject.Overall,thisstudyshowstheimportanceofconsideringtheinteractionsbetweenthestructuralandbehavioralantecedentst
