3、iberal”goals.I shallrefertoilliberalspeech,religion,andassociationas“illiberalism”for short.Whatshouldbetheliberalstate’sresponsetoilliberalism?Ifitoutlawsilliberal-ism,itscredentialsasaliberalstateappeartobeundermined.Ifitpermitsilliberal-ism,itlicensesRobertFrost’sderogatoryquipthatli

4、beralismcan’ttakeitsownsideinanargument.Eitherway,liberalismappearsself-contradictoryandincoherent.Itmusteitherbetrayitsprinciplesorbetrayitself(andtherebybetrayitsprinciples).Liberalismbothappearstobepossible—we’veseenitdone—andimpossible(itcan’tbe done).Thatis,inbrief,theparadoxoflibe
