1、MetacognitiveStrategyTrainingforVocabularyLearningAbstractResearchshowsthatnotallL2strategy-trainingstudieshavebeensuccessfulorconclusive.Sometraininghasbeeneffectiveinvariousskillareasbutnotinothers,evenwithinthesamestudy(Oxford,1989).Thepurposeofthepresentstudywastoshedlightontheis

2、sueostrategytraining.WehaveinvestigatedtheeffectofmetacognitivestrategytrainingthroughtheuseofexplicitstrategyinstructiononthedevelopmentoflexicalknowledgeofEFLstudents.ToreachthegoalofthestudytwogroupsofEFLlanguagelearnersatintermediatelanguageproficiencylevelwererandomlyassignedtoa

3、controlandanexperimentalgroup.Bothgroupsreceivedinstructiononvocabularylearningstrategiesthrougha10-weekperiodofinstruction.However,onlytheexperimentalgroupreceivedmetacognitivestrategytrainingduringthecourseofthesemester.Thetrainingmodelusedwasbasedontheframeworkfordirectlanguagelea

4、rningstrategiesinstructionproposedbyChamotandO'Malley(1994).TheresultofthestudyshowedthatexplicitmetacognitivestrategytraininghasasignificantpositiveeffectonthevocabularylearningofEFLstudents.[-1-]IntroductionIthasbeenclaimedthatsuccessfullanguagelearnershavetheirown"specialwaysofdoi

5、ngit".Stern(1975)andRubin(1975)wereprobablyamongthefirstresearcherswhobroughtuptheideaofsuccessfullanguagelearners.Theideacanprobablyhelpuswithbothunderstandingmoreaboutthenatureoflanguagelearningandalsotofacilitatethelanguagelearningprocessforothers.Sincethispremise,mostoftheresearc

6、hintheareaoflanguagelearningstrategieshasfocusedontheidentification,description,andclassificationofusefullearningstrategies.Theresearchhasbeendescriptivewiththeaimtoelicittheusefulstrategiesappliedbysuccessfullanguagelearnersassumingthatitcouldhelpotherlearnerstobecomemoresuccessful.
