3、tateshadformallyarticulatedstrategiestopromoteentrepreneurship.Today,amajorityofstateshaveannouncedprogramsofthistype.Asoneindicator,researchersattheRUPRICenterforRuralEntrepreneurshipnotethattherearenow600,0001placesyoucangoontheInternettoexploreruralentrepreneurship.Asstatesandlocalit

4、iesembraceentrepreneurialdevelopmentstrategies,theyfaceanumberofchallengesoftenfacedinnewandemergingpolicyarenas.Theseincludethecreationofsystemsforsharingeffectivepractices,craftingnewprofessionaldevelopmentopportunities,anddevelopingprocessesformeasuringandassessingpolicyimpacts.These

5、myriadchallengesalllinktoanevengreaterchallenge---movingentrepreneurialdevelopmentintothemainstreamdiscussionsofruraldevelopmentstrategies.Thisessayreviewsthestateofartinstateandlocalentrepreneurshippolicy.Itreviewscurrenttrendsinthefield,andassessesthestrengthsandshortcomingsofongoingi

6、nitiatives.Inparticular,wefocusonissuesofmeasurementandassessment.Howarewedoingintermsofassessingtheeffectsofentrepreneurshipdevelopmentprograms,andwherecanweimprove?Finally,weconcludewithaseriesofrecommendationsforstrengtheningthefieldviaimproveddatacollection,performancemeasurement,an
