2、February17,1992Summary.Maternally-derivedpassiveimmunityofinfantmicetochallengeinfectionwithenterotropiccoronavirusmousehepatitisvirusstrainY(MHV-Y)wasstudied.Pupsborntobothnaiveandimmunedams,butnursedbynaivefosterdams,weresusceptibletoinfection,whilenaiveorimmune
3、pupsnursedbyimmunefosterdamswereprotected.TheMHVinfectiousdosewasidenticalamongnaivepupsinoculatedat1,2,3,or4weeksofage.Pupsnursingimmunedamsresistedinfectionwheninoculatedat1,2,or3weeksofage.Threeweekoldpupswereprotectedonlyiftheywereallowedaccesstotheirimmunedam
4、s.PupsborntoMHVimmunedams4inconsecutivelittersacquiredequalMHVIgGtitersinserumandwheyandwereallprotectedagainstchallengeinfection.Onlypupsactivelyingestingimmunewheyatthetimeoforwithintwohoursaftervirusinoculationwereeffectivelyprotected.Pupsborntodamsimmunizedbyo
5、ralinoculationwithliveMHVacquiredbothMHV-specificIgAandIgGintheirwhey,whilepupsborntodamsimmunizedwithkilledvirusacquiredonlyIgG.BothIgAandIgG,butnotIgGalone,wererequiredforcompleteprotection.IntroductionCoronavirusesinfectmanymammalianandavianspecies,includinghum
6、ans.Mousehepatitisvirus(MHV),thecoronavirusofmice,isahighlycontagiousandmutableviruswithnumerousantigenicallycross-reactivebutdistinctstrains.Likecoronavirusesofotherspecies,MHVstrainscanbedividedac-cordingtotheirprimarytissuetropismintorespiratoryandenterotropics
7、trains[3].EnterotropicMHVisthemostcommonformofnaturalinfectionincontemporarymousecolonies,butistheleaststudiedofthetwoMHVbiotypes.Itisthusimportantnotonlyasanaturalpathogenoflaboratorymicebutalsoasapotentialmodelforentericcoronavirusinfectionsofotherspecies.36F.R.
