3、bodies(MAbs)tobovinecoronavirus(BCV,Quebecisolate)E2andE3glycoproteinswhichwerefoundpreviouslytobeneutralizinginvitrowereexaminedforvirus-neutralizingactivityinvivo.Surgicallyligatedintostinalloopsofnewborncolostrum-deprivedcalveswerevirus-inoculated,mock-inf6ctedorinocu-latedwithamixtureo
4、fvirusandantibody.OfthesixBCV-specificMAbs,fourwerefoundtobeprotectiveagainstavirulentfieldisolateofBCV,asindicatedbyareductioninvillousatrophy.TheseMAbswerespecifictoantigenicdomainAandantigenicdomainsA1andA2ontheE2andE3glycoproteinsrespectively.MAbstoantigenicdomainsBandContheE2andE3glyc
5、oproteins,respectively,werenotprotective.Bovinecoronavirus(BCV)isconsideredtobeoneoftheleadingcausativeagentsofviralenteritisinnewborncalves(Babiuketal.,1985).Thediseaseischaracterizedbydiarrhoeaandseveredehydrationandisoftenfatal(Mebus,1978;Mebusetal.,1973).BCVinfectsepithelialcellsofthej
6、ejunum,ileumandcolonresultinginsevereshorteningofvilli(Mebusetal.,1973).Thevirioniscomposedoffourstructuralproteins,anucleocapsid(N)proteinandthreeenvelopeglycoproteinsthathavebeendesignatedEl,E2andE3(Storzetal.,1981;King&Brian,1982;Deregtetal.,1987).Monoclonalantibodies(MAbs)totheQuebecis
